The music program at Sea Crest gives students the opportunity to develop their talents and prepare for lifelong participation in the performing arts. Throughout the curriculum, students are introduced to the music of various cultures, time periods, and styles.
The program challenges students’ gross and fine motor skills, visual and aural memory, and intellectual and creative understanding as they experience active music making in the form of singing, instrument playing, and movement.
Students in grades K–4 meet twice a week for 30 minutes, and are trained in both Orff and Kodaly methods.
Fifth grade students participate in a special Music Workshop which meets twice a week for 50 minutes. They are introduced to beginning band, and learn to read music through playing an instrument, as well as learning the basics of vocal/choral singing.
Music is an elective class for Middle School students. Students have the option to continue their instrumental studies in the Middle School Band, or advance their vocal skills in the Middle School Chorus. Each class meets twice a week for a 45-minute period.
All students in the music program participate in the Winter and Spring Concerts, as well as smaller programs throughout the year.
Music is a multifaceted and dynamic art that is not translatable into other forms of communication. It is something that is uniquely human and therefore should be nurtured in every human being. Music-making at Sea Crest is a cooperative process, an aspect of learning proven to contribute to whole-brain learning and scaffolded understanding of the material.
A comprehensive musical education is not just about performance but about understanding the relationships between music and all different aspects of life, including the other arts and disciplines outside the arts.
Most importantly, the goal of the music program at Sea Crest is about inspiring students to feel passion for something—to know themselves better and know how music affects them every day of their lives.
