Sea Crest School is committed to extending education beyond the walls of the school. Our Service Learning program is tailored to the developmental needs of middle schoolers and connected to our guiding principle of “I leave it better than I found it”.
The 7th and 8th grade program encourages students to approach unfamiliar situations and diverse populations with empathy; to develop a sense of identity, responsibility and purpose in relation to the surrounding community; and to act on their desire and ability to affect positive, thoughtful change.
Each year, the program increases its scope of service projects. Grade 7 students begin with Global Sustainability, and study our impact on the environment and what action steps can be taken to lessen that impact. They live these lessons by managing our school recycling and composting, working with the California Coastal Clean Up project and increasing awareness through our Earth Week events. Grade 8 students focus on the theme of hunger and poverty, identifying their root causes, and serving at a food bank and at a serve-a-meal program.
